So what are we doing in MCOM 101 this semester?


Learning outcomes

LO1 – You will understand how media messages are created and for what purposes.
LO2 – You will gain basic skills in:
                                     Photography
                                     Audio gathering techniques
                                     Video gathering techniques
                                     Editing
                                     Teamwork
LO3 – You will be able to articulate why you created what you created and the reasons for your creative choices.

Personal objectives

PO1 - Understand how different media are constructed creatively, culturally, socially and technologically.
PO2 - Apply media analysis skills to your everyday media diet.
PO3 - Gain knowledge of the history of popular media culture and how it influences current media culture.
PO4 - Think DEEPLY
PO5 - Gain a sense of the aesthetics (to build your opinions)

Guiding questions for the semester 

  • What is artist/creator/sponsor of a message trying to say?
  • For what purpose is the message couched in a particular medium? 
  • Why this message? Why this medium? Why now?
  • WHY is the most important question you will ask this semester
